Week In Review, October 5th Ed.

This weekend we were able to welcome back several hundred of our Alums.

The Welcome Back Reception in the Student Commons kicked off Homecoming 2016.

Volleyball was on their sixth winning streak winning 3-2 over Erskine during the Blackout Game on Wednesday leading into Homecoming! Read about it here. 

Our cheer team kept the spirit alive, while Alexandra Henriott was named Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week! Read about it here.

Of Good Nature came out to play at our Second Annual Hurricane Party (Hurricane not included this year!)

During Homecoming 2015, Hurricane Joaquin (Phoenix) devastated and demolished our plans for a good time — but that didn’t stop us! Those of us that stuck through the wind and the rain were determined to live up to our Abbey Heritage. This year we celebrated with live music, Jive Turkey Legs Food Truck, and The Rivermen Brewery!

Our Phi Kapps had a Greek Reunion this year!

On Saturday morning our current Lacrosse team had a match against our Alumni!

2015 Graduates, former Women’s Lacrosse teammates, and suitemates pose, for a picture before the match!

The most important meal of the day was kicked off with a buffet hosted by Abbot Placid and President Thierfelder!

The Homecoming Court was presented first at the Women’s Volleyball game on Friday night and then the Queen and King announced on Saturday afternoon at halftime of the Men’s Soccer game.

Congratulations to Cierra Skyers and Sean Moriarty our 2016 Homecoming King and Queen!

The field events were kicked off by the Women’s Soccer game against Southern Wesleyan!

Our Lady Crusaders won 4-1! #RaiseTheRed Read about it here.

The Men’s Soccer game following Women’s Soccer was also against Southern Wesleyan. It was an intense match both teams tied at zero the first half.

Eventually, Southern Wesleyan scored twice and despite a fantastic effort from the team and goal by Clay, we lost by one. Read about it here.

Pretty much everyone’s favorite part of homecoming, the iconic field events, ran through the entire doubleheader against Southern Wesleyan.

Old friends were reunited.

Dudko was getting everyone to take pictures with him and say “Alright!”

Between old friends, inflatables, food trucks, brewery stands, the matches, and of course the monks, there was a lot to document and more memories of why #AbbeyLifeIsGood!

The motorsport management program event brought out a car that people could sit in and take pictures with!

Overall it was a blast!

Following the Field Events was the Alumni Wall of Fame Dinner honoring our special guests including inductions for the Alumnus of the Year and the Alumni Wall of Fame. This year’s Wall of Fame Inductees were: Doug Wetmore’65, and Charlie Martin’70. The Alumnus of the Year were: Brad Thomas’91, and Shannon Thomas’92.

Over in Holy Grounds was the Saturday Social serving a variety of fancy cheeses and good company!

This year’s specific class reunion was the class of 1981! Friends caught up among food, live music, and twinkly lights.

Homecoming came to a close with the solemn Mass of Remembrance.

It is when we remember and celebrate the lives of Abbey Family members who now rest with the Lord.

Abbot Placid was so excited to greet and welcome the Alums!

Later on Sunday, the Abbey was happy to host Life Chain on campus for the first time.

Headed up by Junior Hintemeyer Katya (who took over the Belmont Abbey Snapchat to promote it) and Crusaders for Life, many students worked to make the event a success.

Life Chain is a peaceful, prayerful witness for life. Students, sisters, monks, and alumni alike lined up from the bridge across the front of campus towards Circle K.

They held signs and prayed the rosary as a silent witness to the sanctity of life.

Over 70 people showed up and that didn’t include the rest of Gastonia who was also participating in this incredible witness for the pro-life cause! #AbbeyLifeIsGood
