The Catholic Intellectual Tradition goes back thousands of years. Doctors of the Church and other saints provided the faithful with plenty of material that both challenges and encourages us toward a better understanding of how faith and reason work together.

Sadly, many universities lack an understanding of the truths laced throughout the Catholic intellectual tradition. Some professors view religion negatively because they haven’t studied the past and present intellectual pursuits of Catholic leaders. Others may practically rewrite history to paint the Church as anti-science based on assumptions, they learned during their own college years. Whether on purpose or through no fault of their own, faculty and staff at some universities fail to provide students accurate information about religion and its place in our world.

Meanwhile, at Belmont Abbey College, we ponder the beautiful mind of Gregor Mendel, faithful Catholic friar and father of modern-day genetics. We praise God for the life and work of Louis Pasteur, faithful Catholic who viewed science as complementary to the discovery of God. We delight in the Rule of St. Benedict, which devotes an entire chapter to the “Artisans of the Monastery.” As Catholics, we seek beauty, truth, and goodness in life and education.

We are the only Catholic college to do that within 300 miles of Charlotte, NC.

We don’t live in the past, but we certainly look to our collective Catholic history to inform our future. Our Benedictine heritage is a source of inspiration for us and is visible every day on campus through the presence of the monks of Belmont Abbey.
