Belmont Abbey College Receives Grant from Community Foundation for $5,000
BELMONT, N.C. (October 6, 2016) – Belmont Abbey College is pleased to announce it has received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Gaston County. These funds will support the expansion of a community gathering area in the Abbott Vincent Taylor Library on the Belmont Abbey College campus.
With the expansion, this newly furnished area in the library will be able to serve the needs of the larger Gaston County Community. “With the most recent change in location of Tutorial Services in the library, there is a window of opportunity to seize an otherwise under-used space and create a dedicated Community Art/ Learning Space capable of hosting exhibitions, workshops, storytelling and more,” said Don Beagle Director of the Library. With the addition of damage-resistant moveable, stackable tables and chairs, the library can create effective gallery viewing areas for openings, or host groups of local community residents eager to learn about a wide range of activities from resume writing to preserving their family documents.
The Community Foundation awards annual grants through a competitive application and review process. The college established a timetable for the project with a completion date in the fall of 2016 and new initiatives beginning in spring of 2017. The Gaston County Arts Guild has already been identified as a primary partner in utilization of the new space.
The library will install a mounting system, already in use in a hallway gallery, into the new community space. The Library will also fund future exhibits from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in this Community Arts/ Learning Space, and will be able to host coordinated lectures and learning events associated with these future exhibits. In addition, a storytelling initiative will help participants hear about other cultures and give a voice to their own culture.
