Internships

The Office of Career Services & Internships networks with business professionals in the Charlotte area and beyond to bring great opportunities for professional growth to the students of Belmont Abbey College.  As an intern, you have the chance to explore potential career fields, tie course of study concepts to the ‘real’ world, gain invaluable, hands-on experience, develop new skills and earn academic credit while you network with others in your field.

Proof that internships work:

  • 58% of new hires had internship experience*
  • 46% of average interns transition from internships to full-time hires*
  • 95% of employers use internships as their number one recruiting method for new hires**

Find an Internship:

The Office of Career Services & Internships manages the internship programs for all majors on campus. The office maintains an online database of available internships, and will assist students in searching for the appropriate learning experience. In order to receive academic credit for an internship, students are required to complete the following steps:

  1. Complete an Internship Agreement with your supervisor at the internship site and submit to the Office of Career Services & Internships. The contract is the agreement between all parties involved and must be on file in order to receive credit. The Agreement is also available by emailing careerservices@bac.edu. If you are participating in a not-for-credit or experience-only internship, please indicate “not-for-credit” on your Internship Agreement.
Experience-Only Internship: You do not need to register for a class, however, the Internship Agreement is required.
For-Credit Internship: Register for the appropriate course. It is college policy that students must register for and complete an internship during the same semester
  2. You must work 40 hours for each one hour of credit. For example, to earn three credits for the internship you must complete 120 work hours over the course of the semester. A six-credit internship requires 240 work hours.
  3. Notify your faculty advisor that you will be doing an internship and inquire about the academic assignment.

Internship Policies:

  • All students completing internships must read and sign the COVID-19 Addendum.
  • Internships eligible for academic credit must have the approval of the student’s major department, many of which have differing academic requirements.  Students will be awarded 1- 12 credits as determined by the College.
  • All students must have completed their sophomore year prior to earning Internship credit.
  • An internship for experience only is valuable, but still requires an Internship Contract and approval by the student’s major department.
  • Students must register for an internship during the same semester that they will be working the internship hours and prior to accumulating any internship hours.
  • Students engaged in summer internships will be charged summer tuition fees.
  • Housing is available to any student registered for six or more credit hours during the summer session.
  • Any student engaged in a fall or spring semester internship will be charged if he or she is taking more than eighteen credit hours.
  • Students must contact the Office of Career Services and Internships to complete and submit a signed Internship Contract prior to beginning an internship.
  • Please read our complete Internship Program Policies here.

Career Services

It is our mission to educate students and alumni on the career development process and to teach them the lifelong skills of personal career assessment, resume/cover letter writing, and how to manage their own career development.

The Office of Career Services endeavors to provide complete career development services in a welcoming, educational environment. We believe that the path to success is through the awareness of your personality, interests, skills, faith, and values and developing a career development plan that meets your individual needs. We strive to assist our students and alumni in reaching personal excellence and virtue.

We also strive to meet the various and individual needs of our employer organizations in an efficient and complete manner. All services are offered with the belief that without you our students can not succeed in leading a virtuous and productive life.

Focus

The first step in the career development process is to first assess your personality, interests, skills, faith, and personal values, to determine how they fit in with desired careers. The path to personal and professional success starts with these questions and will help you decide on careers that provide you with the stability, success, and happiness that are essential to a productive life.

The Focus assessment tool is a web-based program that examines your personality, interests, skills, and values, and provides feedback to begin the career exploration process. The use of the Focus system should be accompanied by an appointment with Stephannie Miles in Career Services, to fully maximize the experience.
