“To be open to the world and its people is to be open to God and His works. My experience at Belmont Abbey continuously shows me the fruit of this openness and the joy that I have found in a place that welcomes me home. I see the mission of the school in not only the campus, but so many of the students, the staff members, the monks, and the president. Thankfully, this school found me in Michigan and gave me unforgettable memories and friends.”

This Past Week At The Abbey

Last weekend, three Belmont Abbey College students presented research papers at the tenth annual “Meeting in the Middle” undergraduate conference in Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Longwood University, VA. The theme for this year’s conference was “The View from the North”, and their presentations focused on aspects of the medieval history and culture of the British Isles. Of the ten colleges and universities represented by the seventeen students who spoke at the conference, Belmont Abbey college had the highest number of participants aside from the hosts, Longwood University.

Br. conference

Br. Gregory Marshall presented an insightful paper on a central theme of the Arthurian legend in a paper entitled “Malory’s Enigma: Arthur, Lancelot, and Fate in Le Morte Darthur”.

sean m conference

Sean Moriarty regaled his audience with tales from early Ireland as he explored concepts of medieval kingship in his paper, “The High Kings of Ireland”.

brendan vickers conference

And Brendan Vickers examined the theme of colonial discourse in relation to sixteenth-century English depictions of Ireland in a presentation on “The English Image of Irish Culture: John Derricke’s Plates.”  Congratulations to all three students for their achievement. They performed admirably and won high praise from the audience and from conference organizers for their efforts.

Mary’s Sons is an apostolate to promote praying for our priests, to support vocations, and to establish Holy Hours/Holy Eucharistic Adoration specifically designated for our priests and vocations throughout the Diocese. Two years ago, they began the Kneeler Prayer Pilgrimage program. Their apostolate purchases a personal prayer kneeler for each soon to be ordained priest each year, and parishes and other groups then “host” the kneelers for a time so that their community can pray for these seminarians. Belmont Abbey College hosted the kneelers in the Adoration Chapel  Monday, April 11 through Wednesday, April 13th giving students, staff, faculty, & coaches and opportunity to pray for new priest . One of our very own alums, Cory Catron, is one of these future priests!
