Belmont Abbey College is overjoyed to announce the successful bone marrow drive sponsored by Women’s lacrosse! On Valentine’s day and the following day, Women’s lacrosse seniors Jordan Hofmeister and Kassie Easter coordinated the college bone marrow drive that officially adds 106 individuals to the National Bone Marrow Registry. The team would like to thank everyone for their participation in saving a life and being a different kind of perfect match!

Alpha Sigma Pi Sorority
Belmont Abbey College hosted the first Dance Marathon for the Children’s Miracle Network. The $5,200 raised at the Dance Marathon went to Levine’s Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Belmont Abbey Greeks were major contributors this year, making up almost $2600 of the total raised. Alpha Sigma Pi sorority lead all Greeks by raising $1200. The Dance Marathon was a huge success!
Septima Clark Signature
In honor of Black History Month, Professor Emeritus Dr. Frank Murray donated this signature of Septima Clark, to Belmont Abbey College Library. Clark was called “The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was a champion for education and social justice throughout her life. Clark was awarded an honorary Doctorate from Belmont Abbey College in 1983. The image here shows a photograph of Dr. Murray and Septima Clark at commencement in 1983, the text from the presentation of her honorary degree from Belmont Abbey College, and Clark’s signature at the bottom. We are honored to add this important signature to our Special Collections!

The Belmont Abbey debaters returned to campus after competing at Arkansas Tech University’s tournament. The competition involved both team and individual IPDA. In team debate, Mary Rose Stepnowski and Logan Torve advanced through both Quarterfinals and Semifinals on 2-1 decisions over the University of Central Arkansas and Drury University. In the final round against another team from the University of Central Arkansas, Belmont Abbey dropped on a 1-2 decision. In all, Mary Rose and Logan placed second of 17 teams from seven schools. Logan was also named fourth individual speaker for the team tournament.
The second half of the weekend included individual IPDA, wherein approximately one third of 64 competitors advanced to elimination rounds. In novice, Addie Hodges won three of six rounds, positioning her only speaker points away from the top ten in her division. In junior varsity, Mary Rose Stepnowski dropped in a break round that would have advanced her to elimination rounds, resulting in a 2-4 record. Finally, in varsity, Logan Torve was unable to break with a 2-4 record; however, he was awarded second varsity speaker at the tournament. For our next tournament, we will return to Arkansas Tech University for the IPDA National Championship Tournament and Convention in late March. This past weekend’s competition primarily served to learn the differences in judging preferences and regional argumentation prior to the tournament next month. There are a few significant changes that we will be working on between now and then to see more positive results at the National Championship. Ultimately, most lost ballots came down to framing and weighing mechanism preferences that differ from North Carolina’s region.

Men’s Golfers Trim 23 Strokes in Second Round of Richard Rendleman
Belmont Abbey’s golfers trimmed 23 strokes off yesterday’s first round, finishing Tuesday with a team score of 304. That left the Crusaders with a total of 631 over the 36 holes, good for 12th place in the team standings.
Ferguson Hits for 18, but Second-Half Rally Falls Short
Ben Ferguson hit four of his game-high six three-pointers in the first five minutes of the second half, keying a fierce rally that fell short in an 85-67 setback against King Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Championship.

Belmont Abbey sophomore guard Megan Weidenhamer has been selected to the 2016 Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Academic All-Conference Team, the conference announced today.
Crusaders Baseball Defeats Lander 9-4
The Belmont Abbey baseball team defeated Lander Tuesday night to improve to 10-8 on the season. The Crusaders collected 13 hits to defeat the Bearcats 9-4 breaking a 4-4 deadlock in the sixth inning.
