Our Premier Scholarships
The Honors College
The Honors Fellowship is awarded to students accepted into the Honors College, the foremost academic scholarship program at Belmont Abbey College. Like the Great Books programs at Columbia, Oxford, and Notre Dame, the Honors College inspires students to pursue what Matthew Arnold famously described as “the best which has been thought and said in the world.” Here at the Abbey, students are encouraged to do this through a unique series of courses, lectures, and independent studies, in which they learn to listen to authors, teachers, and each other with what The Rule of St. Benedict calls “the ear of your heart.”
Saint Thomas More Scholarship
At a time when Americans are increasingly concerned with questions of religious liberty, the dignity of the person, and the recovery of a truly humane, liberal education, the Saint Thomas More Scholarship program offers students a bridge between their academic studies and an enriching civic and social life. Thomas More was a man of faith, politics, and the liberal arts, and, through the legacy of his life and death, he calls us to develop a Renaissance spirit with which to renew and invigorate the space where we reside.
Taking distinctive and direct inspiration from that legacy, the Saint Thomas More Scholarship provides an excellent resource for young men and women who are themselves seeking a Renaissance education that integrates faith, moral courage, and liberal learning in the pursuit of wisdom. To that end, our program involves active participation in its own yearly 3-credit seminar courses, in its annual Fall seminar, together with the opportunity to attend any of a diverse schedule of cultural and social events organized by the program itself and through related college societies. Before graduation, scholars are also required to complete either a semester in one of the college’s Debate Society programs, or an internship and subsequent, student-led post-internship workshop.
Felix Hintemeyer Catholic Leadership Award
The Hintemeyer program seeks to form young Catholics as men and women of integrity, charity, and prayer; and to empower them to be Christlike leaders at Belmont Abbey College and beyond. The program requires exemplary character; serious commitment to the truth and life of Catholicism; exceptionally strong self-motivation, initiative, and creativity; academic diligence and accomplishment; and employment of these qualities and abilities in the service of others. Throughout their four years in the program, Hintemeyer scholars strive to grow together in faith, virtue, and knowledge, and to discern through reflection and practice the nature of authentic Catholic leadership. In all things, Hintemeyers strive to exemplify the Hintemeyer spirit of “charity towards all.
Bishop William G. Curlin Scholarship
A Curlin scholar will find personal formation, spiritual formation, and other learning experiences outside the classroom. Your academic advisor will guide your coursework based on your major and work with the program director to ensure your college career is one that forms you in the mind of Christ just like Bishop Curlin.
Father John Oetgen Scholarship
The purpose of the Oetgen Scholarship is to provide Theatre Arts or Dance Minor students the opportunity of financial assistance. Belmont Abbey College offers minors in both fields, and the scholarship recipient is required to minor in one of these. Father John Oetgen, O.S.B Scholarship for Excellence in Theatre and the Performing Arts was created by President William Thierfelder in 2005 to honor the achievements of Father John, O.S.B. (1924-2009). He entered Belmont Abbey in 1944, and was ordained a priest in 1951.
