ABBEY STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Belmont Abbey College partnered with Samaritans Purse participating in Operation Christmas Child with student Marvellous Okonne at the helm. Students, faculty, staff members, and the Abbey community at large donated $1,552.00 and assembled 217 shoeboxes intended for children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, or disease.

Last year, in our first year partnering with Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, we received over $150 in cash donations and filled 123 shoeboxes. Marvellous championed the entire event both years, taking additional steps this year to maintain safety protocols while still surpassing last year’s numbers.

Since 2018, students, faculty, and staff have come together in large numbers to fill shoeboxes for children all over the world. Here are some memories from past outreaches.

HEAR HIS STORY

One of our own students at Belmont Abbey College was once a recipient of an Operation Christmas Child shoebox. Marvellous Okonne was born in central Africa and faced religious persecution as a child. His family was forced to flee their home and faced financial hardships in an attempt to rebuild their lives. Read our interview with Marvellous.

I was once a kid who received a simple shoebox full of gifts. It changed my life and it reminded me that God loves me.

Operation Christmas ChildOperation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization. Their mission is to provide local partners around the world with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities with the Good News of Jesus Christ. They ship these simple gifts outside the United States to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease; and to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S.
