Involved in: Hintemeyer Program, FOCUS Student Missionary, and Ballroom Dancing Club
“I chose the Abbey because it felt like home. Everything about the place, these people. God’s presence, it makes me feel at home. There is so much love in the hearts, words, and actions of every single person here—professors, monks, fellow students, even the President all love fearlessly and endlessly like Christ Himself.”

The week kicked of with Coffeehouse organized by our fantastic FOCUS missionaries (who sometimes even preform themselves. Make sure to check out Brendan playing the flute below.)

Greek Life has been part of our tradition for awhile now.

The week’s festivities started off with volleyball. All five Greek organizations (Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Pi, & Tau Kappa Delta) competed for points with quite an audience.

Students, such as Senior Thomas More Scholar Elisa and Junior Honors student Grace pictured here, got a chance to meet the Cuthbert Allen Lecturer, Dana Gioia. In a conversation about his essay “Poetry as Enchantment” explaining how poetry communicates—intuitively, intellectually, and musically—about “the mysterious relationship between dream and reality.”

This semester’s Cuthbert Allen Lecture was on”Why Beauty Matters – Not Just in Art but in Faith and Society” In this lecture, Dana Gioia explained how beauty – in poetry, art, and music – enriches our lives, how today’s culture can obscure it, and how we can rediscover its worth. (Diana Gioia is a poet and critic. His four collections of poetry include Interrogations at Noon (2001),winner of the American Book Award. His critical collections include Can Poetry Matter? (1992), a finalist for the National Book Critics Award. He served as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003 to 2009. He holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Culture at the University of Southern California.)
